As precious as emeralds but generally cleaner, Tsavorites are natural, untreated members of the grossularite Garnet family and are a one-source gemstone found only in Kenya's Tsavo National Park in Africa. Supplies of good quality Tsavorite are very limited. Because of its delightfully bright forest green color, it is one of the most sought-after and expensive garnets. Most Tsavorites occur in very small sizes, from 0.5 up to 2.0 carats. Only about 15% of Tsavorites mined annually are over 1 carat in size. Stones over 2.5 carats are quite rare and costly. Common wholesale prices for the very finest Tsavorites can be $2,400 and upward even for stones under 2 carats.
