The mixed cut means the lapidary artist made the usual brilliant cut, then added an additional step cut, which more than doubles the sparkle, dazzle and glitz of the regular oval-cut. The result of this mixed (or double) cut is many extra facets, with even more light bounced around inside the gem, then all of it being refracted back out at the viewer for extra-incredible brilliance, sparkle, and flash. This extra step-cut can be clearly seen in the first photo.
