SquareTrade © AP6.0Ideal for holiday or anytime gift giving: A Traditional Hawai'ian Lei for both men and women! Pronounced koo-koo'-ee nut. Available in glossy dark nuts or glossy mixed dark/white/light nuts.
The kukui tree is very important to the Hawaiian people. Brought to Hawai`i by the first Polynesian settlers, the kukui is a symbol of enlightenment, protection and peace. Kukui was considered to be the body form of Kamapua'a, the pig deity. The kukui nut has many uses. Originally it was most valued for its light - the oil of the kernels was extracted for its use in stone lamps and in ti leaf sheath torches. The shelled nuts were skewered on a coconut frond mid-rib and lit one by one, from the top to bottom, as they sat in a container of sand or dirt, or in the earth itself, for nightime lighting. The bark, flowers and nuts all were used as medicine. As food, the pounded, roasted nut meat, mixed with salt and sometimes very small hot red Hawai'ian chili peppers, is used in very small amounts as a relish called `inamona, most commonly used in fish, particularly in a raw yellowfin tuna, or marlin fish dish, a local delicacy called poke (pronounced poh-kay).
The kukui nuts are widely used as a traditional lei, both the hard shells of the polished black, tan or brown, and immature white, which are more rare. The white kukui flowers and downy, angularly pointed leaves are also strung as lei, representing Moloka`i, whose symbolic color is silvery green.
These Kukui nut lei are commonly worn by men (for wear with your best aloha shirt) for any dressy occasion, although women also wear them, for any occasion but particularly for special events such as graduations and anniversaries. These lei are frequently given as a gift during special events, to a man being honored.
This lei is made from the black or dark brown, brown, and white kukui nuts, polished and strung on silvery white and brown ribbons. The kukui nuts are hard shelled and glossy. The average size of each nut measures 24mmx22mmx20mm thick. Ribbon style fastener may vary very slightly from that shown. PLEASE SPECIFY YOUR CHOICE OF TRADITIONAL DARK NUT OR MIXED NUT LEI.
